Step into the world of CHIAROSCURO, an evocative dance performance created by choreographer Hsing Ya Wu. Meaning "light-dark" in Italian, CHIAROSCURO captures a nuanced exploration of identity, shedding light on the fluid spaces between light and shadow, visibility and invisibility and the intersections of Eastern and Western cultural narratives.

Inspired by Wu’s own experiences as a Taiwanese artist in the UK, this piece invites audiences to reflect on the complexities of cultural identity, belonging, and the tension between perception and self.

Development of the Project

CHIAROSCURO is the third stage in Hsing Ya Wu’s journey through colour, identity and cultural contrasts. Building on earlier stages—BLACK & WHITE, a powerful exploration of stark identity contrasts, and COLOUR, a vivid reflection on cultural roots and resilience—CHIAROSCURO immerses audiences in the nuanced interplay of light and shadow.

This phase deepens the exploration of identity’s fluidity and the tensions between belonging and otherness. With evocative choreography, live music, and striking visual art, CHIAROSCURO bridges East and West, traditional and contemporary.
